The new 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT, and its future performance derivatives, continues to fuel the rumor machine. AMG boss Tobias Moers hasn’t been shy when speaking about the GT. He’s already promised a Black Series variant and now he says there will be an even more track-focused version aimed directly at the Porsche 911 GT3.
This car will essentially be a road-going version of the Mercedes-AMG GT GT3 race car, which will replace the Mercedes-Benz SLS GT3. Moers suggests the GT GT3 should be ready to go for the 2016 season and it’s safe to assume that the street version will follow soon after. He also says it won’t have GT3 in its name, since it belongs to the 911 GT3.
Moers has many goals for the hardcore GT. For starters, it could be up to 220 pounds lighter than the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S that tips the scales at around 3400 pounds. Moers says his team will likely turn to carbon fiber to shave off weight.
Then there’s more power. Moers says the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is currently “understressed” making 503 hp in the GT S. He says a bump to 550 hp would be doable, favorably improving the coupe’s power-to-weight ratio. The GT S is estimated to run to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, so the GT3-derived version should be a tad quicker with a higher top speed (currently limited to 193 mph in the GT S). Other tweaks should include improved aerodynamics and upgraded wheels and suspension bits.

Should this GT3-derived GT make it to our Best Driver’s Car competition, it could have a strong chance of snagging the crown. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series came close to winning 2013 Best Driver’s Car event, placing second behind the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S.
